Realization of advanced materials by using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technology
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
This service offers the possibility of developing new advanced materials (metallic, ceramic, magnetic, and composite materials) with improved properties by using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technology for rapid consolidation of powders. SPS is a fast sintering technique that uses a high pulsed DC current to heat up a powder compact that is loaded and uniaxial pressed into an electrically conductive die/punch set-up usually made of high-density graphite. The SPS installation of HP D25 type (FCT Systeme, Germany) can operate both in vacuum and protective atmosphere (Ar, N2). Compressive forces up to 250 kN can be applied, while a maximum output voltage of 10 V and current up to 10 kA can be generated by the transformer. The applied pulsed DC current patterns can be varied with both ON and OFF segments ranging between 0 and 255 ms.

DESCRIPTION:
90Plus apparatus with a solid-state, standard laser of 35 mW can be used to determine the effective (hydrodynamic) diameter, polydispersity index, and particle size distribution weighted by number, volume, or intensity by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) technique. Sample type can be most colloidal-sized materials, suspended in any clear liquid, and sample volume is of max. 3.5 mL. The particle size range is around 1 nm to 6 µm depending on refractive index, concentration, and scattering angle. The sample materials (polymers, proteins, colloids, or nanoparticles) will scatter incoming laser light, at scattering angles of 15° or 90°. Due to the random motion of these particles, the scattered light intensity fluctuates in time. Processing the fluctuating signal with a digital autocorrelator yields the particle’s diffusion coefficient, from which the equivalent spherical particle size (effective diameter) is calculated using the Stokes-Einstein equation. Molecular weights can also be calculated from these fluctuations or from the scattered intensity. 90Plus apparatus is equipped with BI-Zeta module and electrode assembly that allow zeta potential determinations in water and other polar liquids by Phase Analysis Light Scattering (PALS) technique. DLS and PALS measurements can be performed on diluted suspensions with a concentration ranging 0.0001…1 % v/v.

The LFA 447 NanoFlash is a powerful research tool for making accurate, rapid thermal diffusivity tests on small specimens of materials such as: metals, graphite, coatings, composites, ceramics, polymers. A xenon flash bulb is utilized to quickly heat the lower side of the sample by emitting a light pulse. The heat is then transferred through the sample and is detected by an infrared sensor on the upper sample surface. Thermal diffusivity of a sample with a known thickness and density is then calculated using the time interval between the flash lamp firing a pulse and the infrared sensor detecting the same pulse. The software that accompanies the LFA has built in correlations to calculate the specific heat capacity of the sample. Additionally, the sample is contained within a heater capable of operating up to 300°C.

Lumipol 3 is an extremely sensitive photon counting instrument for measuring chemiluminescence with almost zero background signal. The instrument measures ultra weak light emissions accompanying reactions of various substrates usually of oxidation character. The equipment may find wide use in both science and industry, especially where the problem of stability, stabilization and fatigue of polymers of other nonvolatile organic substrates are in the centre of research interest. Lumipol 3 is suitable for detection and measuring of thermal oxidation of polymers or thermal decomposition of preoxidized polymers containing hydroperoxides from ambient temperature to 240°C. The standard atmosphere is ensured by flow of gas at maximum rate of 150 ml/min. Extreme sensitivity, which is achieved by almost zero background noise, enables to measure the oxidation of polymers already at 40°C and the tendency towards oxidation of organic substrates even in the so-called "induction period" may be well estimated. The efficiency of various antioxidants and polymer stabilizers may thus be evaluated. The substrate examined may involve polymers, food components, edible oils and margarines, motor oils, paraffins, crude oil additives, inorganic materials, etc. The contamination of metal and ceramic surfaces may be detected and quantified as well. Lumipol 3 is an effective analytical tool for testing, the life-service of materials in combination with ageing ovens and for determination of associated hydroperoxides in solid materials. It is possible to quantify surface homogeneity as well as to screen the efficiency of stabilizing systems without necessity to wait for the end of induction period of oxidation.

DESCRIPTION:
The compact optical design of the FP-6300 employs high quality components designed around a DC powered 150W Xenon lamp which is contained within a sealed housing. The lamp output is monitored and maximum stability is ensured by the use of a reference silicon photodiode which monitors the source output and automatically compensates for any minor variation in lamp intensity. The FP-6300 provides excellent sensitivity with a S:N specification of 550:1. The spectrometer consists of excitation and emission holographic monochromators optimized for the UV. Scanning speeds are step variable from 20 nm/min to 10,000 nm/min with a slewing speed of 30,000 nm/min. Variable spectral bandwidths of 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 nm are available on both excitation and emission monochromators. The wavelength range provided by the FP-6300 is 220 nm to 750 nm which can be further extended from 200 nm to 900 nm with the WRE-362 optional sensitive PMT. The FP-6300 can be used for a wide variety of fluorescence applications. Specific applications may require that specially designed accessories are placed within the instrument The FP-6300 sample compartment employs prealigned mountings which enables various optional JASCO manufactured accessories as well as custom-made accessories to be quickly and easily mounted or demounted without the need for time consuming re-alignment. The FP-6300 is capable of making highly sensitive measurements with limited sample volumes.
