Purpose: To monitor the geophysical hazard produced by natural and anthropogenic seismo-acoustic sources (earthquakes, thunderstorms, atmospheric and underground explosions, mining blasts) using a significant amount of high-resolution seismic and infrasound data recorded with powerful and unique instruments in Romania: seismo-acoustic array installed at Plostina (PLOR-IPLOR) and in Bucovina (BURAR-BURARI). Concept: A modern and efficient configuration of both the infrasound stations (IPLOR an...

Research Equipment
High sensitivity detecting equipment for man-made and natural hazards
CATALOG NAME:
DESCRIPTION:
This equipment is a homogenous set of high-sensitivity borehole seismometers distributed over a limited area (of few kilometers) so that characteristics of the seismic wavefield can be estimated by analyzing the waveforms recorded at the component sites. The equipment has a superior signal detection capabilities resulting from the use of specific techniques for data analysis (beamforming and f-k analysis) whereby the background noise is suppressed and signal identification and characterization are performed. The data are continuously recorded and real-time transmitted to the National data Centre, in Magurele, where they are processed and analyzed. The equipment is used to investigate the nature and source regions of man-made and natural hazards such as: nuclear explosions, accidental explosions, earthquakes, thunderstorms etc. The equipment has proven effective in discriminate between mining/quarry blasts and tectonic earthquakes.
