Clevenger type apparatus
CATALOG NAME:
DESCRIPTION:
Clevenger apparatus is used for the determination of percentage of volatile oils present in the oil-bearing material. It is a special continuous form of hydrodistillation, called steam distillation, of essential oils according to the European Pharmacopeia. This method is used for temperature sensitive materials like natural aromatic compounds. Steam is passed through the plant material containing the desired oils that is suspended in boiling water and where steam is generated in situ. The principle of steam distillation consists of: the total vapour pressure of a system consisting of two immiscible solvents (water and essential oil) is equal to the sum of their partial vapour pressures. As one of the components is water, the boiling point of the mixture under atmospheric pressure will be slightly less than 100°C. Thus even constituents having boiling points of over 300°C (sesquiterpene alcohols) can be isolated below 100°C. The device comprises the following parts: distillation flask, electric water bath (allowing a fine control of temperature), 2 condensers, glass graded collecting tube (0.01 mL), inclined condenser, water supply and evacuation systems.

Freeze dryer
CATALOG NAME:
Unicryo TFD 5505 (Serial number: 93465)
DESCRIPTION:
Freeze-drying is a useful technique for removing water from biological tissues, such as food samples, being obtained dehydrated products, without harming them. The process makes use of the physical phenomenon of sublimation, which involves the direct transition between the solid state and the gaseous state without passing through the liquid phase. To achieve this, the frozen product is placed under reduced pressure, while supplying sufficient heat to sublimate the ice and is dried under vacuum, without being allowed to thaw out. Once samples are freeze-dried, they are biologically and chemically more stable than fresh samples, making handling for shipping and storage easier. The process is suitable for: preserving the characteristics of the initial substance; preserving the initial form; conditioning materials; chemical analyses. Characteristics of device: ice condenser temperature: -55°C; the -55 ºC cooling coil is inside the drying drum; ice condenser performance: 3 litres/24 hours; total ice capacity: 5 litres (coil type condenser); drum dimensions: 270 x 270 mm; includes: standard drum with 8 x vacuum valves (½ inch); ideal for connecting freeze dry flasks.

Rotavapor R-210 Büchi (Serial number: 0800014121); Heating bath B-491 Büchi (Serial number: 0800012943); Vacuum Pump V-700 Bü
DESCRIPTION:
The device is used to perform evaporation of solvents, routine process widely performed in the laboratory. It allows quick distillation in a single stage, being favorable to product structure. The basis of this procedure is evaporation and condensation of solvent using a rotary evaporation flask under vacuum. In this way the performance is increases. The device is complete of the following components: rotavapor (rotation: 20-280 rpm; flask capacity: 50-4000 mL); heating bath (water/oil bath - 20°-180°C); vapor temperature sensor; condenser; vapor duct (with Combi-Clip); vacuum seal; evaporating flask (1 liter); receiving flask (1 liter); flask holder; vacuum pump; vacuum controller. Pressure is a crucial parameter in every evaporation process. The vacuum controller V-850 for the display, control and regulation of the vacuum is an ideal supplement to the Rotavapor. This vacuum controller has some advantages: chemical-resistant precision pressure sensor with capacitive measuring principle, integrated ventilation valve that opens if there’s a power failure and prevents over-pressure in the system. The vacuum pump serves to evacuate solvents down to 10 mbar respectively 2 mbar pressure. This pump is controlled by a variable speed and single stroke technology. For certain applications it is necessary to use an oil bath. If the boiling points are below 160°C (at normal pressure), it is better for a variety of reasons to heat with a water bath. There are some advantages of a water bath: high specific thermal capacity = high efficiency, good distribution of heat, no classification of toxicity, readily available, low risk of accident. Where it is essential to use an oil bath, the choice of oil (polyethylene glycol, silicone oil, carbowax, bath oil) is very important.
