Chemical composition and structure analyses
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Laboratory can provide analyses of composition and structure for a wide range of materials, using FT-IR, UV-Vis and Laser Doppler Electrophoresis (LDE) techniques. Measurement methods available for the analysis of liquids or solids using FT-IR spectrometer (TENSOR 37, Bruker) are: - Transmission using KBr pellet. Applications: high absorptive samples, powders, refracting or opaque solids, liquids, air sensitive samples; - Attenuated Total Reflection with Golden Gate diamond ATR unit. Applications: fine particles, powders, thin films, liquids, simple & coated fibers, metallic alloys, thin layers depositions of different types of supports; - Low volume liquid cell (CaF2 window, 1-3 µL sample volume). Applications: liquids, high absorptive samples. UV-Vis spectrometer (NICOLET EVOLUTION 500) is an instrument with double beams (reference and sample beams), applicable to the analysis of samples in two modes: - Using high precision cells (made of special optical glass or quartz). Applications: qualitative analysis (identified of organic compounds or liquids, if any recorded data is available) and/or quantitative analysis; - Using solid membrane. Applications: thin films, thin layers depositions of different types of supports (plastic, glass). Measurement of Zeta potential of micro- and nanoparticles (dispersed in water or organic solvents) is performed by LDE technique. A ZETASIZER NANO ZS 3600 instrument is used for analyzing the stable dispersions of particles having their average hydrodynamic diameter in the range 5 – 10000 nm. Zeta potential is an important and useful indicator of the electronic charge of particles in contact with a liquid, which can be used to predict and control the stability of colloidal suspensions or emulsions. The measurement of Zeta potential is often the key to understanding dispersion and aggregation processes in applications as diverse as water purification, ceramic slip casting and the formulation of paints, inks and cosmetics.

Morphology characterizations
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Using Quanta 200 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), we offer microscopy studies for a variety of specimens such as: polymers, ceramics, metals, alloys, composites, biological materials (insects, animal tissues, bacteria, viruses). We provide high resolution imaging (magnifications of over 100 000x) in a digital format for a wide range of samples: - conventional samples (using High Vacuum model; pressure under 1.3 Pa); - liquid and hydrated samples, oily, hot/ outgassing or dirty non-conductive samples, in their natural state (using ESEM mode; pressure 130-2600 Pa); - uncoated, non-conductive or partially conductive samples (using Low vacuum mode; pressure 10-130 Pa). Also, the Peltier cold stage allows wetting/ freezing of the sample using the ESEM mode pressure range at different temperatures (-20 ÷ 80 °C). Thus, we analyze diverse types of samples such as: sheets (thin films), powders, bulk or sectioned materials.

Testings by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is a thermal analysis technique that measures the properties of materials as they are deformed under periodic stress. Specifically, in DMA a variable sinusoidal stress is applied, and the resultant sinusoidal strain is measured. However, most real-world materials including polymers are viscoelastic and exhibit a phase difference between those extremes. This phase difference, together with the amplitudes of the stress and strain waves, is used to determine a variety of fundamental material parameters, including storage and loss modulus, tan δ, complex and dynamic viscosity, storage and loss compliance, transition temperatures, creep, and stress relaxation, as well as related performance attributes such as rate and degree of cure, sound absorption and impact resistance, and morphology. One important application of DMA is measurement of the glass transition temperature of polymers. Amorphous polymers have different glass transition temperatures, above which the material will have rubbery properties instead of glassy behavior and the stiffness of the material will drop dramatically with an increase in viscosity. At the glass transition, the storage modulus decreases dramatically and the loss modulus reaches a maximum. Temperature-sweeping DMA is often used to characterize the glass transition temperature of a material. Varying the composition of monomers and cross-linking can add or change the functionality of a polymer that can alter the results obtained from DMA. An example of such changes can be seen by blending ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) with styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and different cross-linking or curing systems.

Thermal behavior analyses of micro and nanostructured materials
SERVICE DESCRIPTION:
Laboratory can provide thermal analysis, such as TGA, DSC, TGA-DSC coupled with a Mass Spectrometer, for a variety of liquid and solid specimens: polymers, ceramics, metals, alloys, composites, thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, plastic films, fibers, coatings, paints, etc. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) can be used to measure a number of characteristic properties of a sample. Using this technique it is possible to observe fusion and crystallization events as well as glass transition temperatures Tg. This type of analysis can also be used to study oxidation and other chemical phenomena, such as cross-linking. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) can provide information about physical phenomena, such as second-order phase transitions, including vaporization, sublimation, absorption, adsorption, and desorption. Likewise, TGA can provide information about chemical phenomena including chemisorptions, dehydration, decomposition, and solid-gas reactions (e.g., oxidation or reduction). TGA is commonly used to determine selected characteristics of materials that exhibit either mass loss or gain due to decomposition, oxidation or loss of volatiles (such as moisture). Common applications of TGA are: - materials characterization through analysis of characteristic decomposition patterns; - studies of degradation mechanisms and reaction kinetics; - determination of organic content in a sample; - determination of inorganic (e.g. ash) content in a sample. Mass Spectrometer (MS) employed in conjunction with thermal analysis provides speciation of evolved species as function of temperature and time to provide an extremely powerful technique for the characterization of materials and their interactions and reactions with their environment. This system has significant advantages as in many applications it is desirable to carry out thermal analysis in inert, oxidizing, reducing or self-generated atmospheres.

Zetasizer Nano ZS 3600
CATALOG NAME:
Zetasizer Nano ZS 3600
DESCRIPTION:
The Zetasizer Nano performs size measurements using a process called DLS - Dynamic Light Scattering (also known as PCS - Photon Correlation Spectroscopy). DLS measures Brownian motion and relates this to the size of the particles. It does this by illuminating the particles with a laser and analyzing the intensity fluctuations in the scattered light. It also calculates the zeta potential by determining the Electrophoretic Mobility and then applying the Henry equation. The electrophoretic mobility is obtained by performing an electrophoresis experiment on the sample and measuring the velocity of the particles using "Laser Doppler Velocimetry" (LDV).

UV-VIS Spectrophotometer
CATALOG NAME:
Nicolet Evolution 500
DESCRIPTION:
The Nicolet Evolution 500 is a double beam spectrophotometer built around a robust aluminum base casting. Wavelength accuracy is achieved by software compensation. The calibration routine finds 9 predefined emission lines over the wavelength range using Mercury and Deuterium lamps, and uses these to characterize the instrument and so calculate the correct motor position for the required wavelength. The standard scan speed options allow the setting of fixed scan speeds. The maximum rate at which the spectrophotometer can scan is 1200 data points per minute. By slowing the scan speed and/or increasing the data interval the integration time can be increased and consequently noise decreased. The VISIONpro Software Applications offer the possibility of using different working modes such as: Fixed Application, Quant, Multicomponent Analysis (MCA).
